Dark omens descend upon an old Viking chieftain as he lives through his final night. Nordic mythology, Sagas and real life tragedies mix in this tale of devotion, regret and renewal.

Finally after almost 5 years in the making my 11 minute epic stop-motion short film is finally out. I am very excited and think it ended up being really good. I hope that some of you will catch it on the big screen when it reaches a festival close to you.

The epic and rocking video We have a Situation with The Damned Things just hit the internet. It’s great since I made all the special effects for that video. Yeah, the LAZERS!!!

It’s a rock band with the guitar player Scott and Rob from Anthrax and Andy from Fall out Boy. And yeah while shooting the video I also ran into Will Smith. Guess this is me entering the Hollywood scene with style!

An evening with Yuri Norstein

Last Friday, we had the privilege of going to a screening and Q&A with renowned animator and filmmaker Yuri Norstein. For those that aren’t familiar with his work, I highly recommend checking them out, particularly “A Hedgehog in the Fog” and “Tale of Tales.” Though his technique is much more complex than what I’m going to attempt to describe, he basically uses cutout puppets on a multi-plane set up (downshooter with several glass shelves to create depth).

It was a real treat to be able to see the films on an actual print, the colors and textures were much more vibrant and fulfilling. The Q&A session with (my former teacher) Igor Kovalyov and Yuri was also eye opening and humbling. It’s inspiring to see artists never giving up on their craft and continuing to pursue their vision despite worldly difficulties. Yuri struck me as the kind of person with a keen sense of self-awareness and purity of thought.

One last thing, those that attended also had a chance for a sneak peak at his feature film (being produced since 1981!) “The Overcoat.” It was silent and black and white, but man what a masterpiece! The level of detail and subtle acting is astounding. I hope he gets to finish it, I would love it if a company would have the guts to finance it.

Magnuzaki Studio is currently involved in a collaborative theatre piece being directed by the fabulous puppet master Katie Shook and written by Sibyl O’Malley. We are all very busy developing the visuals for the projections and having a lot of fun. Scheduled to be released this summer. Stay tuned for more updates!

Party at Yo Gabba Gabba!

Yo Gabba Gabba! threw an art party last night and it was a blast! Complete with characters made out of cupcakes, yummm!

We had a few prints for sale from Tae’s (a.k.a. Joice) new Naughty but Nice series. Here’s a preview:
